What you need to know

It's for everybody

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.

Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.

The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.

The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree not kind. Our terrorist hunters, skiers, mountain bike riders and housewives have found their best fitness from the same regimen.

Thousands of athletes worldwide have followed our workouts posted daily on this site and distinguished themselves in combat, the streets, the ring, stadiums, gyms and homes.

CrossFit is a fitness regimen developed by Greg Glassman over several decades. Glassman, CrossFit's Founder and CEO, was the first person in history to define fitness in a meaningful, measurable way: increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains. He then created a program specifically designed to improve fitness and health.

CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. All CrossFit workouts are based on functional movements, and these movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more. These are the core movements of life.

They move the largest loads the longest distances, so they are ideal for maximizing the amount of work done in the shortest time. Intensity is essential for results and is measurable as work divided by time—or power. The more work you do in less time, or the higher the power output, the more intense the effort. By employing a constantly varied approach to training, functional movements and intensity lead to dramatic gains in fitness.

The community that spontaneously arises when people do these workouts together is a key component of why CrossFit is so effective, and it gave birth to a global network of CrossFit affiliates that number over 13,000. Harnessing the natural camaraderie, competition and fun of sport or game yields an intensity that cannot be matched by other means.

The CrossFit program is driven by data. Using whiteboards as scoreboards, keeping accurate scores and records, running a clock, and precisely defining the rules and standards for performance, we not only motivate unprecedented output but derive both relative and absolute metrics at every workout. This data has important value well beyond motivation.

Overall, the aim of CrossFit is to forge a broad, general and inclusive fitness supported by measurable, observable and repeatable results. The program prepares trainees for any physical contingency—not only for the unknown but for the unknowable, too. Our specialty is not specializing.

While CrossFit challenges the world's fittest, the program is designed for universal scalability, making it the perfect application for any committed individual, regardless of experience. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change the program. The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree, not kind.

Trying something new

CrossFit for the most part is relatively new to most people. Its Constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity, and in layman's terms, its nothing you have ever done before.
CrossFit completely challenges your fitness and health, its not just about how fast you can run, or how strong you are, but all the above. Most important thing to note is that anybody can try CrossFit.
All the workouts and movements are scalable and modifiable to anybody, at any age (young or old), Able bodied or disabled. The only limitation in CrossFit is yourself.

Fosters a sense of community

Aside from being a good workout, CrossFit is done as a class where you meet similarly motivated people passionate just as you are about their health and fitness. You will get support from these people whether you finish first or last, or whether you lift 5 lbs or 500 lbs. The general attitude of the community is that no one gets left behind.

Challenge your limits

The CrossFit regime is designed in such a way that all your workouts and lifts are measurable, whether by time, weight or repetitions/ rounds completed.
This means you can test your limits frequently by setting benchmarks for different workouts and movements and then put in some good training and test your limits again in a few weeks to see if you got better. Whats better than being able to lift more or be faster than you were before?

Constant guidance

All CrossFiters have coaches. He's the guy at the front of the class instructing, demonstrating, guiding, correcting and motivating you everyday you show up. He's the one that will never let you quit a workout or go missing from classes for too long.
He's your friend, your worst nightmare, your biggest cheerleader and the person that will take you from your first day of class to the day you also decide on becoming a coach.
Even then he will still be your coach. CrossFit coaches live and breathe the lifestyle and are always willing to share and guide others along the journey.
